What are Category and Tags
Category and tags are one of the taxonomies in WordPress that are used to organize posts in groups. Taxonomies are the way of grouping content together. You can divide your content into sections with these two predefined taxonomies.
The proper structure of the website depends upon these categories and tags. Categories are different topics like Laptops, Mobiles, and tags can be brands like Nokia, Samsung, etc. You have to use them on your website to organize your content to easily find them.
If you want to start your WordPress website, you should use these taxonomies to properly manage your website contents.
Let’s create categories and tags and assign them to your website posts.
How to Add Category in WordPress
If you want to add categories in WordPress, you have to login to the WordPress dashboard. Now, go to the dashboard menu option Posts >> Categories.
A page will open where you have to fill the form to add categories. It requires category name, slug, and the description of the category. Fill property each input box and click the ‘Add New Category’ button to add the category.

Add Tags in WordPress
To add tags, you have to visit the dashboard menu option Posts >> Tags.
A page will open where you have to fill all the details in the form. This includes adding tag name, slug, and the description of the tags you are going to add.

You can check your added tags in the list of tags as given above. It’s indicating the added tag after following the above steps.
Assign Categories and Tags to WordPress Posts
After you add the tags and categories in WordPress, it’s time to start adding them to the related WordPress posts. You have to open the posts edit page where you can find the categories and tags as indicated below.
So, let’s start assigning the category to post first. After category, we will add the tags to the related posts in WordPress.
Assign Category
To add the category to the posts, you have to select the required category by clicking on the checkbox. The below example showing the checked category which is added to the posts.
You can also add the new category here by clicking on the link ‘+ Add New Category’. An input box will open where you have put the new category and press Enter button to add. The new category automatically gets selected on adding to the posts.
Assign Tags
To add the tags to the post, you have to type a few letters of the tags to get it as a suggestion. See the image below showing the suggested tags after you enter a few letters of the tags. You have to click this suggestion to select the category for the post.

Edit Categories and Tags in WordPress
If you want to make some modifications to your added categories and tags. You have to follow the steps given below. Let’s start with editing the category in WordPress.
Edit Categories
To edit the categories, go to dashboard menu option Posts >> Categories.
A page will open where you can find the list of all the categories. You have to find the required category to edit. Now, hover over the category to get the ‘Edit’ link. Click the link as indicated in the image below.
It opens the form where you can edit all the input boxes. Make all the necessary changes and click the ‘Update’ button to complete editing the category.
Edit Tags
If you want to edit the tags, you have to visit the dashboard menu option Posts >> Tags.
A page will open where you can find the list of all the added tags. You have to take your mouse and hover over the name of the tags to get the ‘Edit’ link. Click the edit link as indicated in the image below.
This opens a form that contains the details of the tag’s content. You have to modify it as per your requirement. After modifications, you have to click the ‘Update’ button to save your modifications for the tags.
Delete WordPress Categories & Tags
If you have so many unwanted categories and tags in WordPress. You can delete them easily using the step given below.
Delete Category
To delete the categories, you have to click the dashboard menu option Posts >> Categories.
You can find here many added categories that are not required for your WordPress website. You have to find the category you want to delete and take your mouse to hover over the category. A ‘Delete’ link starts showing that you have to click to delete the selected category from WordPress.
Delete Tags
To delete the tags, go to dashboard menu option Posts >> Tags.
Here, you will find the list of tags contains from which few are not required. You have to take your mouse and hover over the tags you want to delete. A ‘Delete’ button starts appearing that you have to click to delete the tags from the list.
